Industry Specific
Overseas competitive intelligence (CI) interest has been high in the telecommunications industry.
We have undertaken CI assignments focused on the solutions supply needs of particular participants and the dynamics of particular segments of the industry such as payphones. The intelligence on what sort of equipment particular players would need in the future had implications for the client's R&D and operational strategy. As a result of our study of payphones, the overseas client clearly decided the product/market segment was too small and unprofitable to justify further market entry plans.
For other telco's we have developed brand positioning maps and divined competitors segment positioning strategy. This involved analysing the market entry and development strategies of all the major players and a content analysis of their marketing messages to understand and characterise the position they were adopting in key competitive segments. It meant hours of watching compilation tapes of the major players' advertising campaigns. In the end it was almost a form of aversion therapy.
The resultant market segment positioning maps showed the client in imminent danger of ending up positioned in the overcrowded middle of the market, fighting for space and for some differentiation with other key and potential competitors focused and positioned on the high ground. Stuck in the middle was a risky place to be.
Further examples of the types of work we have done for other clients are outlined below:
Competitor Profile
A typical assignment would encompass profiling one or more aspects of a particular competitor, including: strategies, market positioning, sales, advertising, operations, personnel, management, logistics/distribution, financial, manufacturing or information technology components. A detailed report is delivered outlining the competition's current and projected future activities, as well as recommendations for our client to maintain or improve market positioning.

Organisational Charts
A firm wanted to gain an understanding of the organisational structure and dynamics of a potential acquisition before making the final decision to purchase. The MindShifts Group was asked to identify all departments, structure, staffing and head count. This information was used to develop an understanding of the duplication that would exist between the two firms in the event of a merger.

Industry Profile
A client approached MindShifts to identify companies within their industry sector and provide brief profiles on the major players. A report was delivered identifying new competitive threats and possible counter strategies for our client.

International Expansion
An offshore company was interested in expanding into the Australian marketplace. MindShifts conducted an extensive industry, market, competitive and in-country supplier profile. This was delivered in a comprehensive report along with recommendations for the strategic purpose of a successful entry into the Australian market.
